This new body of work consists of approximately 15 pieces of work on canvas and wood panel ranging in sizes from 24 in by 24 in to 8 ft by 10 ft. Included in this work is a sculptural figure reflecting the textures and colours of that in the paintings. The sculpture is approximately 1 ft by 6 ft. The formal qualities of these pieces resemble elements of nature, erosion, decay, reinvention, the effects of time or rather the concept of time. This work signifies what has always been and what will always be, forever changing, yet constant. A simultaneous occurrence. The show runs from September 1--14, 2008. The artist's reception is September 4 at 7pm. Exiled artist harnesses nature to share his past through contemporary paintings Native Iraqi artist Jabbar Al Janabi translates his expertise of music, dance and spoken word into contemporary paintings with the aid of nature's elements in his debut solo exhibition Phantasma. Layers upon layers of sun-baked paint crack and weather the surface to form haunting and alluring imagery. Phantasma runs from August 5th until the 27th at Yaletown Gallery. The artist's reception is August 7th at 7pm. Classically trained at the Baghdad Institute of Art, Al Janabi's work has been shown in galleries and museums throughout Baghdad and Jordan and focus on mythological themes using symbols from Mesopotamian and Eastern arts. In 2002, Al Janabi founded the AtmAsphere Art Society with a mandate to develop and promote cross-discipline and cross-cultural collaborations.
