Mom, daughter win PNE prize home
Rainy weather puts a damper on PNE attendance
By Katie Mercer
The Province
Tuesday, September 02, 2008
It was an impulse that made Verna Wilson tear a page out of The Province and buy a last-minute PNE prize ticket Monday.
"She had a feeling," said Madeline Wilson, 59.
The mother and daughter were the winners of the $1.5-million PNE prize home last night.
But contacting the two turned out to be tricky.
The phone number they'd written on their prize-home ticket was for the furniture company Verna started 21 years ago -- and where the 87-year-old still works 12-hour shifts daily.
Madeline, who runs her own promotions company, was watching Global and reading the paper in her West Vancouver apartment when she heard their names.
"I thought, 'How many of those could there be?' " said Madeline, not knowing her mother had bought 15 tickets.
"I thought they must have grabbed from last year's barrel."

Last-minute impulse buy by 87-year-old produces family windfall

Vancouver Sun
Wednesday, September 03, 2008
VANCOUVER - An impulse purchase by an 87-year-old North Vancouver woman on the last day of the draw has won her and her daugher the PNE Prize Home grand prize package, valued at nearly $1.6 million.
"Isn't this spectacular," said Verna Wilson, as she toured the Gibsons-bound home with her daughter Madeleine Wilson after a whirlwind of the an evening. "This is too much to take right now."
PNE officials were unable to reach the Wilsons after announcing the winner live on television because the phone numbers on the ticket were invalid. They then raced to the address given, which turned out to be the office of International PBX, a mining company Verna started 21 years ago and still administers on every day.
Madeleine was watching Global News and called their newsroom,...

Rain put a damper on the 98th Pacific National Exhibition this year.
PNE spokeswoman Laura Ballance said the fair attracted 753,298 visitors, down from 906,808 last year.
Ballance said the 10 days of rain during this year's 17-day fair kept crowd sizes down.
"On the days it wasn't raining we had very strong crowds," said Ballance.
"Long-time exhibitors and multi-generational families that come each year know you catch weather and sometimes you don't. This year we didn't."
The poor attendance is comparable to 2004 when about 767,000 visitors visited the fair despite 11 days of rain.
But Ballance said PNE management is happy with this year's overall turnout.
"We had a very strong year given the fact that three out of five years we've had very tough weather," said Ballance. "Hopefully we're out of that cycle now."
