Front impact
The Ranger did not achieve the minimum number of points in this test to get a three star rating, even though it scored enough points overall. The impact overloaded the structure and the passenger compartment became unstable. The car was penalised for that and for the following: collapse of the A-pillar and the extent of rearward movement of the steering wheel; the risk posed to the driver's lower legs by upward movement of the brake pedal; rupture of the footwell and rearward displacement of the pedals, which exceeded 400mm. There was insufficient pressure in the airbag to prevent the head from contacting the steering wheel. Protection of the driver's chest was rated as weak, mainly due to the threat posed by the extent of structural collapse. Values from the left knee of the driver dummy indicated a high risk of injury and protection was rated as poor. Deformation of the footwell and movement of the pedals resulted in poor protection of the driver's lower...

Front impact
The passenger compartment remained stable during the impact and the screen pillar was displaced rearward by less than 10mm. Protection of the passenger dummy was rated as good for all body regions. The driver's knees and femurs were well protected by the knee airbag. Volkswagen were able to demonstrate that the airbag would provide a similar level of protection to occupants of different sizes or those sat in different positions.
Side impact
The Golf scored maximum points in the pole test. In the side impact, it lost a fraction of a point for chest protection. Since Euro NCAP's tests, a clip securing the side airbag has been upgraded by Volkswagen and is fitted to all customers' cars.
Child-protection
Based on the dummy readings from the dynamic tests, the Golf scored maximum points for its protection of both infants. The car lost points for its non-permanent, pictogram-only label warning of the dangers of placing a rearward facing child restraint in the front...

Front impact
The passenger compartment remained stable in the impact and the windscreen pillar was displaced rearward only 3mm after the test. The steering column is designed to collapse horizontally away from the driver and this created additional space for protection. Degressive adaptive load-limiters tailor the restraint of the occupants according to the position of the seat and the severity of the accident. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs and Volvo were able to demonstrate that similar levels of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sat in different positions.
Side impact
The XC60 scored maximum points for the protection provided in the side impact and pole tests.
Child-protection
Both dummies were seated in rearward-facing child restraints. Based on dummy readings in the dynamic tests, the XC60 scored maximum points for its protection of the 3 year child and lost only a fraction of a point for the...

Front impact
Although the passenger compartment remained stable, spot welds in the driver's footwell became separated during the test. This suggests that structures in this area might become unstable if exposed to the greater loading which might arise from a slightly higher impact speed for example. Dummy readings in the test did not expose problems with the protection of the knees or femurs. However, a knee bolster in the facia was considered to pose a risk of injury to occupants of different sizes and to those sat in different positions.
Side impact
No pole test was performed as the tested vehicle was not equipped with the optional head protecting side impact airbag. The optional thorax airbag was also not fitted to the test car.
Child-protection
Based on dummy readings from the frontal and side impacts, the Viano scored maximum points for its protection of the 3 year child. The passenger airbag cannot be disabled and the labels warning of the dangers of using a...

Front impact

The car scored maximum points for its protection of the passenger. Dummy readings indicated that the car provided good protection of the knees and femurs of both driver and passenger. Renault showed that similar protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sat in different positions.
Side impact
The Megane scored maximum points in the side impact and pole tests.
Child-protection
The passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. However, information provided to the driver regarding the status of the airbag is not sufficiently clear. A permanently attached label clearly warns of the dangers of using a rearward facing child restraint without first disabling the airbag. Since Euro NCAP's tests, the design of the ISOFIX anchorage in the...

Important: Side impact crash test ratings can be compared across vehicle type and weight categories.
Test details:
The Mitsubishi Galant was redesigned for the 2004 model year. All 2004 and later Galant models manufactured after October 2003 include a rear door structural upgrade to improve occupant protection in side-impact crashes (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door).
When side airbags are optional, as in this vehicle, the Institute conducts the test without this option. If a manufacturer offering optional side airbags requests the Institute to conduct an additional test of a vehicle with this option and agrees to reimburse the cost of the vehicle, a second test is conducted. Mitsubishi did not request such a test.
However, Mitsubishi made side airbags standard in the 2005 model year and the Institute tested the 2005 model. The 2004 and 2005 models are rated...
