The river was average above Hanmer,so most of this water came down the Hanmer River. The min flow was OK, but the ediies were very gnarly.

Raft with a bunch of people from the Czech republic. We want to call this rapid Czech Mate. Robin: "High side ....ummmmm. What's Czech for right aga....?" Dobrý something...Vytrvat!!

Whitewater Canoe Club Sunday outing. Rangitata Gorge at 60 cumecs or so?

The first known descent of this powerful West Coast NZ river in the early 1980s. The river came up overnight, hence the foggy lens and the power of the river increases. This has to be one of the most insanely brave trips ever, as hardly any of these rivers had been paddled at the time. The plywood, canvas and inner tube dory was flown in in pieces and constructed at the put in. The tube descent of Collier Gorge has yet to be repeated. Nowadays the Whitcombe is still one of the big water trips on the Coast.

Turn off the sound. This is off 8mm film. Trip in the early 1980s. Maling's Pass to the Lewis Pass highway. Anyone who was on this, please contact me as I have put this up to stimulate some interest in getting archival footage into a single archive for all.

The upper Taipo as videoed by Bill. Just raw footage, sorry. These rapids are the grade 3+ ones below the grade 4 section. A step up for some as the river has changed a lot since the big floods.
