Historic Meeting of Presidents -- 1.7.09

Historic Meeting of Presidents -- 1.7.09
(Jan 7, 2009) - Three ex-Presidents (Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton), the current President (George W. Bush) and the President-elect (Barack Obama) of the United States met today at the White House in Washington, D.C. Video courtesy of C-SPAN, which also points out on its home page that this is the first time since 1981 that all living American Presidents have gathered at the White House. http://www.c-span.org/ An excellent show of unity and grace by the heads of state. As the current president says, regardless of party affiliation, we (all) care deeply about this country.

Full Roland Burris press conference following his being turned away by Harry Reid and the US Senate
(Jan 6, 2009) - Tail end of the media event the Democratic Party has been dreading. Illinois Senator-designate Roland Burris, the man who would represent the only African-American presently serving in the United States Senate following the departure of President-elect Barack Obama, briefly discusses his being both denied membership into the Senate and his being barred from admittance onto the Senate floor. In what could prove a public relations fiasco, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid symbolically fulfilled Congressman's Bobby Rush's recent characterization of Reid as a latter-day George Wallace by refusing to seat Burris or allow his entrance onto the Senate's floor. For more information on who George Wallace is, and the United States segregation-era history Congressman Rush was alluding to, please see the following video and it's video description section (now also linked via annotation during the present video's first 20 seconds): ...

Chicago shows support for new Illinois junior Senator-designate Roland Burris
(Jan 2, 2009) Supporters of new Senator-designate Roland Burris gather outside of Chicago's Thompson Center to show their solidarity with the man who is poised to become the only African-American who would then currently be serving in the United States Senate. One of the supporters, community activist Bill "Dock" Walls, warns that Democratic politicians who seek to block Burris' being seated in the Senate will be subject to future electoral reprisals.

Bobby Rush reiterates support for newly-appointed Illinois junior Senator Roland Burris
(Jan 2, 2009) Bobby Rush, the ex-Black Panther Congressman who definitively defeated President-elect Barack Obama in a 2000 Illinois primary, once again voices his support for Senator-designate Roland Burris. Rush, not shying away from earlier remarks claiming that Harry Reid and other of Burris' prospective new colleagues might make themselves look like pro-segregationist ex-Alabama governor George Wallace if they attempted to bar Burris entry into the Senate this coming week, again brings up the subject of race in the present comments. Roland Burris is poised to become the only current African-American member of the United States Senate.

Bobby Rush: Reid = George Wallace?

Bobby Rush: Reid = George Wallace?
(12.31.08) - Illinois Congressman Bobby Rush goes on CBS' The Early Show and says that should Harry Reid and Senate Democrats seek to prevent African-American Roland Burris from being appointed to the United States Senate, they may find themselves drawing very unflattering historical comparisons with infamous figures such as George Wallace and Bull Connor. * For those either too young to know or who are not American citizens, George Wallace (former Governor of Alabama) and Bull Connor (former police commissioner for the city of Birmingham, Alabama) are notorious characters in the United States' fight to end the practice of racial segregation. Here are their Wikipedia entries: Wikipedia: George Wallace http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_C._Wallace Wikipedia: Bull Connor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bull_Connor Bobby Rush is a former member of the Black Panthers and is best-known as the man who handed Barack Obama his greatest political defeat during a 2000 Congressional...

Bobby Rush -- Democratic Illinois Congressman -- reacts to Senate appointment of Roland Burris

Bobby Rush -- Democratic Illinois Congressman -- reacts to Senate appointment of Roland Burris
Bobby Rush -- the man who delivered a stunning electoral setback to President-elect Barack Obama in 2000 -- responds to Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich's appointment of Roland Burris to fill the United States Senate seat being vacated by Obama as Obama heads to the White House. Rush mentions that Burris would represent the only current African-American United States senator, and that Illinois has produced two former African-American senators. He also remarks that no member of the Senate will want to go on record as seeking the denial of Obama's seat to another would-be African-American senator.
