These shaped figurative "canvases" are some of the works that I made for my graduate thesis exhibition at the University of California, Irvine, 1985. They were an attempt at an original response to the ultra-surface decorative paintings made by Frank Stella, slick and overmanufactured art by artists such as Tony Delap. While I used those former works as points of departure and inspiration, I was also inspired by narratives found inside Gothic cathedral niches that serves as a framing device, which, in turn, echoed the sculptural composition. To a large extent, I continue to revisit the theme even now, in 2008.
