This also hurts Ness/Lucas/Olimar users quite abit since they seem more in danger to being ledge grabbed due to their large heads. But for a Mario user, you have to time when you can grab Ness/Lucas/Olimar/Meta. There's a part of the ledge animation where their heads 'peak' slightly above the ledge. This is when Mario can grab them.
