Sri Lanka's army says it is closing in on the Tamil Tigers' de facto capital in the north. For more than two decades, the country has been entangled in a bitter civil war.   More than 50,000 people have been killed in the conflict between the military and the Liberation  Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or LTTE.  Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley gained exclusive access to the Sri Lankan military as it approaches Kilinochchi.

On Jan 8, 2008 LTTE Police Member was Captured in Badarawella. Meanwhile a LTTE suicide member was apprehended in Trincomale today. At this stage of the war, people in the south need to be keep a watchful eye for LTTE member infiltrating and trying to mingle with civilian population. Keep a watchful eye due to their desperation, they will bomb many economic and political nerve centers in the south. They will try to kill as many civilians as they can before they are fully captured.

The support extended by the Air Force and the Navy to the humanitarian operations which commenced with the Army liberating the Mavil-Aru Anicut, is outstanding. The Air Force shattered countless pre-identified targets and paralysed terrorist activities. Many massive successful air missions were undertaken last year. Air raids caused heavy damage to the Charles Anthony Baby Brigade head office. The Intelligence Headquarters was also raided. Precise raids targetted a building considered as the LTTE Police Head Office, in addition to many strongpoints in Kilinochchi. As a result, the LTTE experienced severe defeat. MIG, Kfir and MI-24 helicopter gun ships were mostly involved in these raids.

Udaya Nanayakkara said while the gallant soldiers of the Army of the 53rd and 55th Divisions are continuing their advancement, have succeeded in taking control of four LTTE monitoring centres. As such, the US Embassy in Colombo said there is no need to have talks with the LTTE. The war which has gripped the island for more than 25 years is drawing to an end. Particularly the liberation of Kilinochchi an LTTE stronghold can be considered as the final phase in the war. The Sri Lankan government is engaged in an effort to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. The US Embassy in a special statement said it is confident that a political solution will be found with the operations drawing to close. US is optimistic that all communities will receive the opportunity of living in a peaceful environment.
