Identificación: 30cm. Muy sim. al C. Piquinegro (3). Pico negro encima, amarillo debajo (variable en inm.); ojos oscuros; anillo ocu¬lar desnudo gris (amarillo en inm.). Delgado. Por encima oliva pardusco, blanco por deba¬jo; cola larga y graduada; todas las rectrices, excepto las dos centrales, negruzcas, con an¬chos ápices blancos y redondeados (visibles desde debajo); primarias rufas (conspicuas en vuelo). Especies similares: V. C. Piquinegro (3). C. Manglero (6) tiene máscara negra prominen¬te y partes inferiores ante y no tiene prima¬rias rufas. También cf. C. Perlado (5), C. de Antifaz (7) y C. Canelo (8). Comportamiento: Arisco, furtivo y silencioso en área de invernada. Usualm. en cubierta densa. Transeúntes a veces se concentran temporalm. en números grandes. Estatus y Habitat: Transeúnte y residente de invierno, principalm. med. Sept-med. May; unos pocos se retrasan o permanecen durante el verano (reg. visuales, 3 Jun cerca de Bogo¬tá; 6 Jun en Buga, Valle;...

Last spring, I was fortunate enough to go by my pond and discover this species in breeding mode. Watch especially the pair in amplexus where the female is releasing her eggs to be externally fertilized. Notice, also, how the male is helping her release them! It is not only fascinating to watch the miracles of nature as they happen, but is also very educational. Enjoy this rare sighting! The sounds you're hearing are of other males in the same pond calling for mates.
