In this video we describe a few products of glycolysis and fermentation. During glycolysis, electrons are removed from a six-carbon molecule of glucose, which produces two three-carbon molecules of pyruvate. As a result of this process, high-energy molecules called NADH and ATP are formed, which provides the organism in which glycolysis takes place with a small amount of energy. The process of glycolysis is anaerobic, which means that it does not require oxygen in order to take place. Since glycolysis does not rely on the presence of oxygen, it seems reasonable to assume that the earliest life forms, which developed under anaerobic conditions, used glycolysis as a means to obtain energy. When glycolysis occurs in the yeast cell, the pyruvate which is produced undergoes fermentation. During fermentation, enzymes break down pyruvate, which reduces it to ethanol and carbon dioxide. While on my way to assist another driver, I noticed a few WM carts in the heart of Clarkston. At first I gave it no thought, and as I continued on, I noticed that every house had a brand new WM refuse and yellow top recycle cart at the curb. I was surprised, because for years, Clarkston had always serviced their own residents. Imagine my luck to find this beast on the first day of service in the city of Clarkston! Thank you to the crew and for the excellent work that they do.
