This year Summer Days with Coo (河童のクゥと夏休み) comes to The Waterloo Festival for Animated Cinema - http://www.wfac.ca/ - Keiichi Haras critically acclaimed 2007 film Summer Days with Coo joins the WFAC 2008 lineup on Sunday November 16, at 13:30 for its Canadian premiere. The heartwarming story a little reminiscent of E.T. follows the initial excitement of a young kappa (a river troll from Japanese mythology) trying to fit into a human family, but ultimately not being able to fit into a world of humans. This year both Genius Party AND Genius Party...Beyond comes to the Waterloo Festival for Animated Cinema - http://www.wfac.ca/ - - Seven short films from different directors. Atsuko Fukushima's intro piece is a fantastic abstraction to soak up with the eyes. Masaaki Yuasa, of MIND GAME and CAT SOUP fame, brings his distinctive and deceptively simple graphic style and dream-state logic to the table with "Happy Machine," his spin on a child's earliest year. Shinji Kimura's spookier "Deathtic 4," meanwhile, seems to tap into the creepier corners of a child's imagination and open up a toybox full of dark delights. Hideki Futamura's "Limit Cycle" conjures up a vision of virtual reality, while Yuji Fukuyama's "Doorbell" and "Baby Blue" by Shinichiro Watanabe use understated realism for very surreal purposes. The film is currently in production. Based on the epic graphic novel by John Bergin, From Inside is is the tale of Cee, a young pregnant woman who finds herself on a damaged train slowly transcribing its way across a bleak, apocalyptic landscape. This year Egon and Dönci comes to the Waterloo Festival for Animated Cinema - http://www.wfac.ca/ - Egon and Dönci are two lonely inhabitants on a distant solar-system's tiny planetary. Egon is an amateur "space-exploratory" trying to seem very moderate, but his deeds are dogged by constant ill fortune cased mostly by his fumbler cat, Dönci. The film puts on the two figures' comic conflicts, vicissitudes, as they get into all kinds of staggering adventures while exploring the sensible existence far away from earth. While some events are portrayed in exactly the same way, often using the same storyboards from the television show, albeit newly redrawn; other events unfold differently, using new storyboards and/or 3D computer animation. Most notably, the fifth angel Ramiel (now renumbered as the sixth Angel), and the fight against it, has gone through a complete redesign. Shinji Ikari arrives in Tokyo-3, sent for by his father Gendo. Quirino Cristiani: the mystery of the first animated movies comes to the Waterloo Festival for Animated Cinema - http://www.wfac.ca/ - Today forgotten, Quirino Cristiani delivered the first animated movie -El Apóstol- in Buenos Aires in 1917. In 1931, Cristianis genius and industry resulted in another breakthrough when he produced Peludópolis, the first animated feature film with sound. The documentary shows whats left of his work, a lost interview and 2 shorts that have been re-discovered during the making of this film. Since his ground breaking feature films have been destroyed in a number of fires, this documentary is all that exists to chart his unique adventure. Thsi si a flim about the life and time of Quirino Cristiani, the forgotten maverick who voiced his ideas against corruption and marked a pivotal point in the history of cinema making the first animated movie.
