Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
(Gillespie-Magee Jr., John, High Flight)
... and they all lived happily ever after?

PART 4: Looks Good/Flies Good-Flight Test-To Touch the Face of God
Flight didn't happen by accident and in this segment, pilots recount some of the early, comical attempts to put humans in the skies, then we look at the contributions of the test pilots and engineers who have advanced aviation technology and we end with the beauty of earth and sky seen only by pilots and immortalized in poem "High Flight" by RCAF WWII pilot John Gillespie Magee Jr.
Featured Pilots: Jack Kearbey, A. Scott Crossfield, Dorothy Cochran, George Daubner, Bill Broadwater, George Degnon, Mark Hettermann, Tom Poberezny.
On the Wings of a Dream is the story of flight as told by those who travel the skies. The pilots, the stories they tell and the passion they share, take viewers into the heart of humankind's desire to fly and show us flight is more than transportation, it is a remarkable journey of the human spirit--a century in the making.
The film was commissioned by the Wolf Trap Foundation for the...
