Nelliel ocupaba el puesto de Tercera Espada años antes de que el Hougyoku fuera conseguido por parte de Sōsuke Aizen, este le encargó tanto a ella como al Quinto Espada Nnoitra Jiruga la búsqueda de Vasto Lordes en Hueco Mundo, nelliel despreciaba los asesinatos perpetrados por su compañero, incluso cuando los Hollows eran opositores a Aizen. A pesar de esto salva a Nnoitra en alguna ocasión y ante el enfado de este, ella respondió que lo ayudaba simplemente por ser un Espada y que lo acompañaba porque era más débil que ella, lo cual le hizo valedora de un profundo odio por parte de Nnoitra.
