When Yohji Yamamoto wants to convey his ideas to the people he works with he uses words, not drawings. Each of his collaborations with an artist, a photographer, a scenographer, a filmmaker, a choreographer started with a conversation. Sometimes, as is apparent from interviews within this issue, a few words were enough to realise beautiful projects, develop special friendships, build things that transcend the ordinary. Words are very important to Yohji Yamamoto. Not the endless flood of words used to fill silences, but only those words that seek out the silence, that go for depth, ask questions, listen, look, confirm, words that give warmth, words that sing. Similarly, every new magazine in our series starts with a conversation. Words that capture the essence of that conversation are used to sketch the rough outlines of the concept. Some of his works are among the greatest music ever written. He wrote wonderful melodies. A warm, big-hearted movie about a thirty-something dentist, Pedro, a gay man with an active social life & a big circle of friends who takes in his nephew Bernardo for two weeks when his hippie sister Violeta goes to India. Pedro isn't too crazy about his babysitting job, but decides to put his normal life on hold for a couple of weeks. Initially he even modifies his sexual behaviour because of the boy's presence, but he is soon impressed by his young nephew's energy & positive outlook on life & a mutual respect & love grows between them. I recorded this video at the end of November as part of my monthly "Clive to Camera" video series and it was in my members area in December. Chris passed away at the young age of 28 in 2005 and as we were approaching Christmas, and thinking about family and friends, that it was a good time to remember him. Now, as we approach the end of this year, I feel it is even more important to remember those who have touched our lives but are sadly no longer with us. With that thought of remembrance is to look forward to the New Year and think about the family and friends who we do have around us and to cherish them - life is a precious thing.
